The Connecticut Sun’s impressive victory over the Indiana Fever in the first round of the WNBA playoffs should have been a cause for celebration. However, the joy of advancing to their sixth straight playoffs was overshadowed by a disturbing email received by Carrington. The threatening email, which Carrington shared on her Instagram story, contained racial insults, death threats, and sexual assault threats.
In response to this abhorrent behavior, the WNBA released a statement condemning racist, derogatory, and threatening comments directed at players, teams, and league personnel. The league made it clear that such behavior would not be tolerated and that league security would be monitoring threat-related activities closely. The WNBA also stated that they would work with clubs and stadiums to take the necessary actions, including involving law enforcement if needed.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, Carrington did not publicly address the threatening email following her team’s victory. Instead, her teammate Alyssa Thomas spoke out against the increasing animosity faced by WNBA players this season, particularly from Indiana Fever fans. Thomas expressed her shock at the racist insults she and her teammates had received on social media, calling the behavior inappropriate and unacceptable.
Indiana Fever head coach Christie Sides also addressed the toxic environment her team had faced throughout the season, describing the hurtful and hateful speech directed at her players. Forward Aliyah Boston even took the drastic step of deactivating her social media accounts to avoid the negativity.
Amidst the online abuse, WNBA players like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese have also been targeted by fans spreading hateful messages. Clark, a standout rookie, called out fans who used her name to further their agendas and stressed the importance of treating all individuals with respect. Reese, another highly-touted rookie, also faced harassment from followers of her rival Clark.
The prevalence of internet bullying within the WNBA has raised concerns among players and fans alike. WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert faced questions about the league’s handling of online abuse during an appearance on CNBC’s “Power Lunch.” While Engelbert initially praised the competitive rivalries within the league, she later apologized after receiving criticism from WNBA players for her response.
